Northern California Rural Medical Association

ABOUT US

Northern California Rural Medical Association (NCRMA) is a membership organization affiliated with the California Medical Association (CMA). Its mission is to promote the science and art of medicine, protect public health, and advance the medical profession. NCRMA physicians provide care across Butte, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Plumas, and Sierra counties.

The history of the Butte-Glenn Medical Society (BGMS), now Northern California Rural Medical Association, began with a dozen physicians meeting in Oroville in 1857. Early medical organizations faced many stops and starts until the 1900s. Glenn County was organized in 1891, and its physicians formed an association soon after. Informal alliances between Butte and Glenn counties continued until their formal union as BGMS in 1946. Today, physician membership includes both BGMS and CMA dues, offering more resources, unified local and state advocacy, and stronger organized medicine.

Although independent, NCRMA is closely linked with CMA. Membership provides leadership opportunities and a local voice in statewide efforts. NCRMA members actively participate in CMA governance through online resolutions and two major annual events: CMA Advocacy Day in April and the House of Delegates in October. NCRMA’s President serves on CMA’s Council of Presidents, and its Board members are eligible for CMA leadership roles.
